Today I found this article on SmashingMagazine.com which looks at the approach to take when trying to create a responsive website.
The article Building A Better Responsive Website written by Jeremy Girard was very informative as it looked at the benefits of using a responsive website (works on all devices, easy to maintain etc.), the limitations of using responsive design, as well as advice on how to design a responsive website, as well as examples on how to code responsive sites.
The part of the article I found most interesting was how to build the website – rather than code the website for specific devices etc. Jeremy goes over designing for mobile first, then changing the layout of the site, based on when the design starts to look “strained”.
This approach will change the layout when needed by the design, and not just when a different device is used to access the site. This approach results in a wider range of devices/screen sizes being accommodated for, and the design still working for devices which have screen dimensions not currently available
